A country's cost index is a national average — the cities nomads actually cluster in usually run above it, everywhere else usually below. This is a rough adjustment, not per-city data.

Accommodation is a nightly rate for hostels, guesthouses, hotels and furnished short-stay rentals, so utilities — water, electricity, heating/gas and Wi-Fi — are already included. Renting an unfurnished apartment for a longer stay? Utilities are usually billed separately there, so add roughly 10–15% to the nightly figure.

Who Wandurance Is Built For

A travel budget stretches differently depending on where you go and how you travel. Wandurance is built for anyone trying to answer the same underlying question — "how long can I actually afford to be here?" — before they commit to a flight.

Digital nomads planning their runway

Treat your savings like startup runway: compare how many working-free days a fixed pot of money buys in Lisbon versus Chiang Mai versus Mexico City, side by side in the comparison tool, before you commit to a base.

Backpackers & gap-year travelers

Stretch a fixed pot of savings across a multi-country route. Switch to the Frugal tier, check the daily number for each stop, and see roughly how many weeks your trip actually has left before you book the next leg.

Expats, slow travelers & remote retirees

For longer stays, small daily differences compound fast. Use the daily-cost breakdown and the basic-medical-care buffer to sanity-check a monthly budget before signing a lease or applying for a long-stay visa.

How the Estimate Works

Read the full methodology

Wandurance starts from four baseline daily costs for a US traveler — accommodation, food, local transportation, and a small basic-medical-care buffer — for each lifestyle tier. Each destination then gets a relative price-level index (roughly: how expensive everyday goods and services are there compared to the US dollar), so a night's stay, a day of meals, a bus fare, and a clinic-visit reserve are all scaled to that country's local purchasing power before being converted back into a US-dollar figure.

That's the same idea behind purchasing-power-parity (PPP) comparisons: rather than a live currency exchange rate, it reflects roughly how far a dollar actually stretches on the ground. The index is Wandurance's own traveler-focused estimate, set by hand from public cost-of-living information and cross-checked against the World Bank's national price-level data. We don't copy those figures directly: they average prices across a whole economy, so they tend to understate what visitors pay for accommodation and eating out. The index is reviewed periodically rather than updated live. Price data last reviewed: October 2026. See the full for every caveat.

  • Days = your budget ÷ the destination's estimated daily cost, rounded down to a whole day.
  • Total cost = daily cost × those days — the portion of your budget the trip would actually use.
  • City cost level nudges that price index up for a capital or major hub city, or down for a smaller city or town — a coarse adjustment for the fact that the index itself is a national average.
  • Coworking & connectivity is an optional fifth category — a rough daily allowance for a coworking desk plus a local SIM/data plan — folded into the total only when you turn it on.
  • Open Adjust daily costs to override any category with your own numbers — useful if you already know local prices.

These are rough planning figures based on general cost-of-living levels, not live prices, specific cities, or your personal spending habits. Always check current accommodation and transport prices before booking a real trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a currency converter?

A currency converter only tells you the exchange rate — what a dollar turns into. It says nothing about what things actually cost once you're there. Wandurance instead scales daily costs to each country's local price level, so it answers a different question: not "what is $1 worth in pesos," but "how many days will my money actually cover here."

What exactly counts as "basic medical care" in the estimate?

It's a small daily reserve — like the cost of an occasional clinic visit or over-the-counter medication — amortized into your daily budget rather than charged as a one-time fee. It is not travel insurance and won't cover a hospitalization or medical evacuation; budget separately for a real travel insurance policy.

Which countries are cheapest for digital nomads right now?

Among popular nomad hubs, South and Southeast Asia consistently stretch a budget furthest — India, Nepal, Indonesia, and Vietnam all come in under $40/day at a normal lifestyle in Wandurance's model. See the budget-friendly destinations table above for a ranked comparison, or search any of the app's 190+ countries directly.

Can I use this for backpacking or a gap-year trip, not just remote work?

Yes — the Frugal tier is modeled on hostel dorms, street food, and public transit, which is exactly what most backpacking budgets look like. Add a country to the comparison tool for each stop on your route to see how a fixed savings pot divides across a multi-country trip.

Is the budget for one person, a couple, or a family?

One person. Every daily cost Wandurance uses — accommodation, food, transport, medical — is estimated for a single traveler, so the budget you enter should be one person's share. Travelling as a couple or family? Divide your combined pot by the number of people and enter that (for example, $6,000 for two people → enter $3,000). Sharing a room usually makes the real per-person cost a little lower than this, so treat the result as slightly conservative.

Does the accommodation cost include utilities like water, heating, and gas?

Yes, for the kind of stays Wandurance models. Accommodation is a nightly rate for hostels, guesthouses, hotels and furnished short-stay rentals, where water, electricity, heating or gas, and Wi-Fi are bundled into the price. If you plan to rent an unfurnished apartment on a longer lease, utilities are usually billed separately — open Adjust daily costs and add roughly 10–15% to the nightly accommodation figure to cover them.

Does this include flights, visas, or travel insurance?

No — Wandurance estimates ongoing ground costs only: accommodation, food, local transport, and a basic-medical buffer, plus an optional coworking/connectivity add-on. Flights and travel insurance still need a separate budget. For visas, Wandurance shows a general reference note — typical tourist-stay length for US passport holders — for a set of popular destinations, purely as a prompt to check further; it isn't personalized to your nationality and isn't a substitute for checking the destination's official entry requirements.

How accurate are the cost estimates?

They're planning-grade ballpark figures, not quotes. Each country's price level is Wandurance's own hand-set estimate drawn from public cost-of-living information, cross-checked against the World Bank's national price-level data, and last reviewed in October 2026 — it isn't a live feed or an official statistic. Popular traveler destinations are the most carefully checked; for less-visited countries, and anywhere with fast-moving inflation or recent currency swings, treat the figure as a rougher guide. Use it for a first pass at a budget, then confirm real accommodation and transport prices for your specific dates and cities before booking.

What does "PPP" mean and why does Wandurance use it instead of exchange rates?

PPP stands for purchasing power parity — the idea that a dollar buys more in a low-cost country than a high-cost one, even at the same exchange rate. A straight currency conversion tells you what your dollars turn into; a PPP-style estimate tells you what they'll actually buy on the ground, which is the more useful number when you're trying to figure out how long a trip is financially possible.

Can I adjust the daily costs if I already know local prices?

Yes. Open Adjust daily costs above the results and edit accommodation, food, local transport, or medical directly — your numbers are used immediately for the Days and Total Cost calculation. Switching country or lifestyle tier resets the fields back to Wandurance's defaults.

Can I plan a multi-country trip, not just one destination?

Yes — the multi-stop trip planner lets you stack destinations in the order you'd visit them with a day count for each, and shows the running total against your budget, so you can see whether an entire route is affordable before you book anything.

Does Wandurance work offline, and can I save or share a result?

Once you've loaded it a first time, Wandurance keeps working with no signal — useful for checking a budget mid-flight or somewhere with unreliable Wi-Fi. Use Copy shareable link to get a URL that reopens your exact budget, destination, and lifestyle, or Print / save as PDF to keep a copy.

Privacy

Wandurance runs entirely in your browser. There's no account, no backend, and no server this page sends your budget or destination choices to — every calculation happens locally on your device.

Two outside requests the page makes: Google Fonts, to load its typefaces, and Google Analytics, to see aggregate traffic like how many people visit and which pages they land on. Both mean your browser contacts Google's servers, and Google Analytics sets a cookie and collects standard web-analytics data (pages viewed, general location, device/browser type) — the same as most sites that use Google Analytics.

Wandurance itself doesn't build a profile of you, doesn't know who you are, and doesn't collect, store, or share anything beyond that aggregate traffic data. Your budget and destination inputs are never sent anywhere — those stay on your device regardless.

Disclaimer

Last updated October 2026. Wandurance is a free planning tool and a first port of call for travel research — not a booking service and not a source of official figures. Please read these points before relying on any number you see here.

Estimates, not quotes

Daily costs are planning estimates, not prices you can book. Each country's figure comes from a price-level index that is Wandurance's own traveler-focused estimate, set by hand from public cost-of-living information and cross-checked against the World Bank's national price-level data. We don't copy the World Bank figures directly: they average prices across a whole economy, so they tend to understate what visitors pay for accommodation and eating out. Price data last reviewed: October 2026. Figures are not live and are not updated automatically between reviews.

National averages, not your exact city

Each index is a national figure. The City cost level setting applies a rough adjustment — higher for capitals and major hubs, lower for smaller towns — but real prices vary with neighbourhood, season, and travel style. Popular traveler destinations are the most carefully checked; for less-visited countries, treat the numbers as a rougher guide.

What isn't included

Flights, visas and entry fees, travel insurance, gear, one-off costs such as deposits, tours or events, and emergencies are not part of the daily estimate. The basic-medical amount is a small buffer for routine clinic visits, not a substitute for travel or health insurance.

Currency and inflation

Exchange rates and local prices can change quickly, especially in countries with high inflation or a recent currency devaluation. A figure that was reasonable at our last review can become outdated within months.

Visa and entry information

Any visa-free stay lengths shown are general guidance for US passport holders, summarised from public sources, and rules change without notice. Always confirm entry requirements with the destination's official government or embassy sources before you book or travel.
